Colonoscopy Prep Instructions with Dr. Tim Hollingsed

PLEASE NOTE: In an effort to improve the quality of the colonoscopy, it is imperative that you complete the entire preparation. When the Prep is taken as directed, and the entire preparation is completed, it provides a successful bowel cleanse approximately 98% of the time.

Be sure to tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Choose a Prep Method

It is imperative that you choose either “Prep A – Prescription or Suprep Method” or Prep B – Over-the-counter Method” and complete the entire preparation instructions for either method.
Please Note: Completing both methods can be harmful. Not following all the instructions and directions may result in your procedure having to be rescheduled.

Prep A – Prescription or Suprep Method

  1. Have your prescription for Suprep filled at your pharmacy. (Best if cold)
  2. You will not need to pick up the additional over-the-counter items described in Prep B.

Prep B – Over-the-counter Method

Purchas your over the counter supplies:

  1. One 64 oz. (no red or purple) Gatorade or PowerAde. Note: If you are diabetic you may use 64 oz. of water and mix in Crystal Light Powder.
  2. Dulcolax laxative tablets (not the suppository or stool softeners) you will need 5 tablets.
  3. One 238-gram container of Miralax Powder (over the counter).
  4. You will not need a prescription to complete this method.

Three (3) days prior to your exam (Both Methods)

Begin avoiding any foods containing any of the following as they may adversely influence the quality of your exam.  Discontinue these foods until after your procedure.

  • nuts
  • seeds
  • beans
  • corn
  • raw vegetables
  • or fruits with seeds or skin
  • whole wheat bread

One (1) Day Prior to your exam: (Both Methods)

Clear fluids ONLY for the entire day including BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND DINNER. Continue fasting (no solid foods) until after your procedure. The more the better.
STAY HYDRATED!

Examples of Clear Liquids Include:

  • Water, Chicken Broth, Soft Drinks (including Sprite, Coke, Pepsi, Orange Soda, Ginger Ale)
  • Strained Fruit Juices (without pulp): Apple, White Grape, Orange, or White Cranberry
  • Limeade or Lemonade, Kool-Aid or Gatorade (NO RED, PURPLE OR PINK)
  • Coffee or Tea (No dairy or non-dairy creamer)
  • Gelatin desserts without added fruit or topping (NO RED, PURPLE, OR PINK)
  • If you can see through it, it is a clear liquid

DO NOT consume any of the following until after your procedure is completed:

  • solid foods
  • Nothing colored RED, PINK, or PURPLE
  • milk, or milk products
  • any fruits
  • vegetables
  • cookies
  • crackers
  • frozen concentrated liquids
  • alcoholic beverages

Prep A: Suprep Prep Instructions

Evening before your Procedure Begin at about 5:00 pm (1st Dose):

Step 1:

      Pour ONE 6-ounce bottle of SUPREP liquid into the mixing container.

Step 2:

      Add cool drinking water to the 16-ounce line on the container and mix.

Step 3:

      Drink ALL the liquid in the container.

Step 4:

    You MUST drink two (2) more 16-ounce containers of water over the next hour.

Evening before your Procedure Begin at about 9:00 pm (2nd Dose):

Step 1:

      Pour ONE 6-ounce bottle of SUPREP liquid into the mixing container.

Step 2:

      Add cool drinking water to the 16-ounce line on the container and mix.

Step 3:

      Drink ALL the liquid in the container.

Step 4:

    You MUST drink two (2) more 16-ounce containers of water over the next hour.

(Must finish both 1st and 2nd doses and all four steps of each dose at least 3 hours before your procedure)
Please contact our office if your stool is not clear liquid (Yellowish color is okay) after taking your second dose.


Over the counter Prep Instructions

One (1) Day before your exam

It is important to follow these instructions to avoid a poor prep and the possibility of having to repeat the test. You may experience some discomfort such as nausea, bloating, and cramping. If you should begin to vomit, stop drinking the preparation for 20-30 min and then finish the laxative preparation.

Step 1:

      At 3:00 pm take three (3) Dulcolax tablets with a glass of water.

Step 2:

      At 6:00 pm mix the entire bottle of Miralax Powder with 64 oz of Gatorade/PowerAde or Crystal Light. Drink one 8 oz. glass every 15 minutes until you have one glass left. Reserve the final glass.

Step 3:

    At 9:00pm take two (2) Dulcolax tablets with the remaining glass of Miralax/Gatorade.

DO NOT have anything to eat or drink for at least 4 hours prior to your procedure.


Three (3) hours before your Procedure Begins: (Both Methods)

  • You must not consume anything additional within (3) hours of your procedure.

Example: If you procedure is at 9:00 a.m., you should not eat or drink anything after 6:oo a.m.

  • Nothing to eat or drink until after your procedure.

Important Things to Remember

  • One prep method must be completed before your procedure.
  • Within (3) hours of your exam, nothing to eat or drink until after your procedure.
  • Bring someone that can stay in the waiting room during your procedure and drive you home safely. Failure to show up with a driver may delay your procedure or it may be rescheduled for a later date.
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Avoid wearing any excessive jewelry like rings, ear-rings, necklaces
