A recent study found that more than 85% of girls aged 12 to 19 do not consume the daily recommended amount of calcium.  Why should this alarm parents?

A low calcium intake isn’t good at any age but it is particularly serious during adolescence.  Ninety percent of female bone mass is acquired by age 19.  The less bone a girl builds during her teenage years the more likely it is that she will suffer osteoporosis and bone fractures in later life. Obese, or just big-boned?

I have often heard in many different circles, “oh he (or she) is not fat, he is just big-boned”.  This very pleasant description of one’s body size is frequently misunderstood, and in most cases we are actually talking about obesity, or overweight.  This epidemic is plaguing our society everywhere and unfortunately it is on the rise.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 34% of the nation is obese; that is one out of every three people.  In fact, over the last 25 years, obesity prevalence has tripled in children.  Now that’s “super-sizing”! Strengthening Bones and Muscles through Exercise

Falls can be serious at any age, but they are of greater concern for older adults.  Around one-third of adults aged 65 and over fall each year.  Many of these falls result in significant injuries.  Many times the cause of these falls are due to weak bones and muscles.  It is possible to reduce your risk for falls by strengthening them through exercise.
