My approach to urology health care is to listen to the patient’s story first, then go to the physical exam, laboratory and x-ray findings. I tend to collate the results and form a differential diagnosis algorithm and discuss the various diagnoses and possible scenarios. When I receive further test results or surgery findings, I re-examine the differential diagnosis and make sure that I have addressed each of the various possibilities. I will listen carefully, use diagrams when necessary, and create best and worst case scenarios in formulating the final diagnosis and treatment options. I am adamant that the patient and family members be intimately involved in all decisions when possible. I do not recommend experimental protocols. I stay within the guidelines set forth by the American Urological Association and American Board of Urology.
